What is a merchant service provider? And how do I find the right one for my business?
Merchant services are resources used by businesses to streamline financial transactions. They enable a business to accept electronic payments and process them efficiently and securely in compliance with payment card industry (PCI) standards. As an authorized liaison between businesses and credit card companies, the merchant service provider (MSP) expedites the process of validating and moving funds from the consumer’s bank to that of the merchant.
The MSP’s payment hardware and/or software transmits a consumer’s transaction details at the point of sale to the appropriate payment card industry member, such as Visa or MasterCard, who then contacts the issuing bank to check on the availability of funds or credit limits. If the transaction is approved, the merchant service provider collects funds accordingly and disburses them in batches to the business through a merchant account.
